De Venecias boost morale at the RIMC — Dr. Mejia

THE name De Venecia evokes an institutional legacy in Pangasinan.

It is on this note that Dr. Joseph Roland Mejia, director of the Region 1 Medical Center, said that the De Venecias are morale boosters at the R1MC.

Speaking during the second anniversary of the Malasakit Center at R1MC on February 22 attended by Senator Christopher ‘Bong’ Go, Dr. Mejia recalled the time when the morale at the  R1MC was at its lowest owing to the destruction it suffered as a result of the July 16, 1990 earthquake and former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. came to its rescue and spearheaded its rehabilitation.

It was a daunting task but Speaker De Venecia persevered till R1MC got a lot of help from the government and in no time, it was back on its own feet.

And when then Fourth District Rep. Gina de Venecia authored Republic Act No. 10614 that sought to upgrade R1MC’s bed capacity from 300 to 600 to become the largest Department of Health-administered hospital not only in Region 1 but in Northern Luzon.

The De Venecias were also highly instrumental in the establishment of the Region 1 Drug Rehabilitation Center administered by R1MC located in Barangay Bonuan Binloc.

Mejia said the son of the De Venecia couple, Rep. Christopher de Venecia, is continuing the legacy of his parents, doggedly pursuing the work started by his mother Gina for the construction of the hospital’s seven-story main building.

During the second anniversary of the Malasakit Center, Senator Go assured both Cong. De Venecia and Dr. Mejia that he will help facilitate the release of additional funds to bankroll the continuous construction of the building this year.

De Venecia said once the building is completed, no patients will be seen being treated in the hallway and in parking areas of R1MC.

The congressman said Senator Bong Go’s assurance to help secure the funding for the continuation of the project, will be a big boon not only to R1MC but to the city and the province.

“Through Senator Bong Go, we can look forward to the realization of this dream,” said De Venecia. (Leonardo Micua)
