LINGAYEN Mayor Leopoldo Bataoil said a total firecracker ban is in effect in the town following the occurrence of separate fire incidents in at least two barangays during the New Year revelry.

Mayor Leopoldo Bataoil went to the affected areas in Tonton and Pangapisan North, together with Bureau of Fire Protection elements of the town, and told local residents that henceforth, a total firecracker ban in the town will be in effect.

The business establishment of Engr. Joe Ferrer in Pangapisan North and the houses of Ma. Theresa Aquino, a school principal, Enriqueta Perez, 73, and Gerald Aquino in Tonton were razed by fire reportedly caused by lighted firecrackers.

Bataoil said a resolution must be passed in all barangay councils adding that firecracker ban will be in effect not only during New Year revelry but in all social occasions including fiestas, weddings, birthdays, etc.

He said sounds from drumbeats by the youth, like the event he implemented on New Year’s Eve at the town plaza to create noise and for safety, will replace the traditional fireworks and firecrackers display.

“The result of this (fire) is heartache, pocket-ache, headache…so henceforth, we will totally ban firecrackers,” he said.

He brought some help to the affected residents and thanked those who helped put out the fire. (Eva Visperas)
