COVID-19 spiked anew in Pangasinan, bringing the number of active cases near the threshold of 700 as 355 more new cases were added to the tally, dwarfing the number that recovered from the disease from January 8 to 14, according to the monitoring of the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

Records of the PHO said that as of January 14, the number of active COVID-19 cases already climbed to 691: 230 are from Dagupan and the 461others are from the province’s 47 towns and cities.

This brought the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 3,384, out of which 2,561 have recovered and the fatalities now at 123.

Health officials said the surge of the disease was expected due to the impact of the holiday season, when people held reunions and gatherings as part of their Christmas tradition mostly disregarded health and safety protocols.

The biggest surge in Dagupan was noted on January 10 when 74 new cases were noted. There were also 63 cases on January 8; 51 cases on Jan.14; 49 cases on Jan. 11; 45 cases on Jan. 9; 40 cases on Jan. 13 and 32 on Jan.12. (Leonardo Micua)
