Pangasinan PNP mulls deployment of drug-sniffing dogs in borders

THE Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPO) hopes to deploy narcotic detection dogs soon at the 19 border control points in the province.

According to P/Colonel Redrico Maranan, PNP provincial director, the deployment of sniffing dogs is part of the strategies submitted to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and the office of Governor Amado I. Espino III to combat illegal drugs in the province.

He said the sniffing dogs will be effective in monitoring all vehicles entering the province.

Maranan said the province’s direct actions against illegal drugs, such as arrests, detention, and confiscation are effective but still lacks in the preventive aspect, hence, the deployment of sniffing dogs can stop the transshipment of the illegal drugs to and through Pangasinan.

Maranan pointed out that only a visual search can be done at the checkpoints, but the drug sniffing dogs can prompt law enforcers to do a more thorough check on the suspected vehicles.

The PNP hopes the SB and the office of the governor will approve the procurement of two to four drug-sniffing dogs by the first quarter of 2021. The trained dogs can cost almost half a million pesos each.

Once acquired, the dogs will be deployed initially at identified drug mules’ routes. (Ahikam Pasion)
