MOTHER AND SON SLAYING

A remorseful police officer who shot dead a mother and son in a fit of anger after an emotional exchange on Dec. 20 in Barangay Cabayaoasan, Paniqui, Tarlac surrendered to the Rosales Police, an hour after the incident.

P/Major Fernando Fernandez, town police chief, said the suspect, Police Staff Sgt. Jonel Nuezca, 45, a native of Urdaneta City but already resides in Barangay Cabayaoasan in Paniqui, Tarlac voluntarily turned himself in.

Nuezca, assigned at the Parañaque City Police Station at its Crime Laboratory, also surrendered his service firearm, a Pietro Bereta caliber 9 mm with one magazine loaded with 11 bullets that he used to shoot mother and son Sonya del Rosario, 52  and Frank Anthony del Rosario, 25, both residents of Barangay Cabayaoasan,

The victims were relatives of Nuezca’s wife and were their neighbors in Paniqui.

Nuezca told Fernandez he proceeded to his brother’s residence in Rosales after the crime and then went to the police station to surrender.

Fernandez said Nuezca confessed he was fed up arguing with the victims about their land dispute whenever he went home in Paniqui. “He was remorseful but he should face the consequences of his acts,” Fernandez said.

The Rosales Police Station called the Paniqui Police Station to take custody of Nuezca for proper disposition and filing of appropriate charges.

A video of the altercation and shooting incident was uploaded on Facebook and has become viral and led to a public outrage towards the police.

In a televised statement, President Duterte condemned Nuezca’s actions and vowed to give justice to the bereaved family. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV/ Ahikam Pasion)
