Ex-Guv Espino seeks to revive Lingayen golf course plan

IT’D be a waste for Pangasinan not to have a golf course it can call its own.

This was the initial reaction of former Pangasinan governor and congressman Amado T. Espino Jr., to his recent acquittal by the Sandiganbayan in the alleged corruption charge over black sand mining filed by his political detractors.

Espino said he would not be held back in pursuing his dream he had for Pangasinan – to have a world-standard golf course in the province as a primary tourism destination, never mind that his initial attempt almost led to his incarceration.

He said he will speak with the provincial government, led by his son, Gov. Amado Espino III, to consider looking into the plans again while the ECC is still in effect.

β€œNakapanghihinayang kung hindi itutuloy ang plano sa lugar”, said Espino.

He recalled that the area in Lingayen was declared an eco-tourism zone in 1994 by then President Fidel V. Ramos when he was still the police provincial director.

When he won as governor, he immediately sought and retrieved the declaration.

He initiated the construction of the golf course in 2010, but he was soon charged for graft and corruption alleging that the golf course was only a front for illegal black sand mining.

The eco-tourism zone has an area of 184 hectares close to the Lingayen Gulf and makes for an ideal tourism destination. (Ahikam Pasion)
