COVID OR NO COVID

SINCE the elections on May 9, 2022 will push through, registration of new voters must continue.

Provincial Elections Supervisor Marino Salas told the KBP Virtual Forum on October 28 that the registration of voters continues in all municipal and city election offices in the province despite the pandemic

Salas said despite the call of some quarters, particularly mayors of Metro Manila for the Comelec to stop voters registration in the meantime because of the pandemic, the poll body started the registration on September 1.

He said the voters’ registration had to start last September 1 because there is no more time left to prepare for the May 9, 2022 elections.

He assured vote registrants that election offices are enforcing the health and safety protocols to protect them.

“Before we resumed the registration, our offices were inspected by officials of the IATF (Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Infectious Diseases) to ensure that the necessary protocols are in place,” Salas said.

He said the IATF representatives (municipal and or city health officers) have certified that the environment inside their offices for the registration are safe.

He pointed out that although voter’s applications can be sent to election offices online, voters still need to go to their offices because their photos and thumb mark and signatures need to be registered in Comelec’s computers.

Seven million voters were deactivated for their failure to vote twice during two successive elections and therefore, need to register again.

Salas noted that the number of registrants appearing at their offices have been steadily increasing. (Leonardo Micua)
