ONE of respondents named in the double murder and three counts of frustrated murder in connection with the ambush of former Fifth District Rep. Amado Espino Jr. on September 11, 2019 committed suicide in his home in Barangay Poblacion East, Calasiao, early morning of October 27.

Ronald Anthony Romero, 36, was found by his wife lying on the pool of his own blood with one gunshot wound in the head.  A cal. 45 pistol was found beside him.

P/Lt. Colonel Ferdinand de Asis, chief of police of Calasiao, said investigators ruled out foul play as the cause of death of Romero.

A letter supposed to have been written by Romero addressed to his son seemed to convey that he wanted to end his life due to depression.

Romero was among the 16 suspects named in a complaint filed by the City Prosecutors Office of San Carlos City before the court but until his death, still no warrant for his arrest was issued against him.

A report stated Romero’s wife was in their room to get his clothes as he directed when she heard a gunshot from outside their house.

When she rushed out, Romero ‘s face was blasted from a bullet wound.

De Asis said days before his suicide, Romero sent a text message, thanking his relatives for their love and care. In the said message, he also bid them “goodbye.”

Last July 5, Romero survived an ambush by two still unidentified men as he alighted his vehicle. He survived, but the wounds left him incapacitated.

Among the suspects in Espino’s ambush was former Board Member Raul Sison, who died on March due to COVID-19.  Romero was known as Sison’s caretaker of fighting cocks.

The police are still determining whether the Cal. 45 pistol used by Romero in killing himself was licensed. (Leonardo Micua/Ahikam Pasion/Jerick Pasiliao)
