THE Sangguniang Panlalawigan has passed a resolution requesting the extension of the December 1 deadline for the implementation of Autosweep RFID and the Easy Trip RFID stickers for cashless transactions on tollways.

RFID is defined as radio frequency identification whose issuance was ordered by the Department of Transportation under its Department Order 2020-012 that seeks to institute cashless toll collection scheme as part of the effort to further reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

The resolution authored by Fourth District Board Member Jeremy Agerico Rosario was directed to the San Miguel Corporation (SMC), operator of the Autosweep RFID and to the Metro Pacific Investments Corp, (MPIC) operator of the Easy Trip RFID.

Autosweep RFID covers toll collection in the Skyway, South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), STAR Tollway, Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX), Ninoy Aquino International Airport Expressway (NAIAX), and the Manila-Cavite Expressway (MCEX).

EasyTrip RFID covers the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), NLEX Harbor Link , Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), Cavite Laguna Expressway (CALAX), CS Link, and the Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX).

Separate resolutions were passed asking both SMC and MPIC to conduct RFID caravans in Pangasinan to enable owners of vehicles in the province to avail of the RFID stickers.

These resolutions were passed as an offshoot to Rosario’s privilege speech where he expressed his personal observation that the current system of requiring RFIDs is creating confusion and desperation on the part of local motorists.

Officials of both SMC and MPIC were also invited by the SP in its next virtual regular session as guests in their Question Hour to answer some queries regarding RFIDs. (Leonardo Micua)
