THE National Bureau of Investigation Dagupan District Office (NBI-DADO) has warned the public of online identity theft amid the pandemic that forces residents to spend more time with their gadgets online at home.

The NBI said it has been receiving 12 to 30 cases per month since the pandemic started, far cry from the normal five to 10 cases.

Roberto Gonzales, NBI-DADO special investigator, said criminals, scammers, and swindlers have been very active in social media stealing the identities, profile information and their photos, and creating fake accounts initially by hacking or phishing.

The modus operandi is to learn more about their targets before approaching them or their friends, asking special favors, usually a sim load, or cash.

The agency warns netizens not to post sensitive information online, in order to keep predators at bay and advises to keep social media friends and contacts of which accounts are legitimate.

The NBI encourages victims to file complaints with their office so the scam operators can be traced. (Ahikam Pasion)
