OVC: A man for others. Nobody’s fool.

THIS was how The PUNCH knew the late Archbishop Emeritus Oscar V. Cruz since he stepped foot in Pangasinan in 1991.

A witty, humorous, outspoken man steeped in the teachings of Christ, would not be ignored at anytime to stop the exploitation of he poor by those in power and the elite.

He did more than lead religious processions around the city. He was our militant bishop who would not mince words to get his message across to call attention to the plight of the poor and powerless, the hungry and the needy not just in the archdiocese but in the country. His voice rung out loud and true.

OVC was not a member of the old boys club inside the Catholic Bishops Conference. He had a word for the hypocritical posturing among his peers.

We saw him in his elements when he led a march around Dagupan City and the protest rally at the city plaza and to deplore the continued protection of illegal gambling by local and national leaders in the country.

For once, we saw in OVC, a man of God, who refused to use the trappings of his position, who tirelessly fought to uplift and protect the poor just as Jesus Christ preached to the world. His doors were open to anyone who dared want to see him.  He even earned the respect of another anti-jueteng advocate – Sen. Ping Lacson.

OVC has been sorely missed. He is, and will be missed as the Archbishop OVC in our life.

Work of nuts

THEY are not just bad eggs but terribly rotten per se.  That’s what several Duterte diehards have become, transforming themselves from not just a bunch of bootlickers but into blind as bats as well in their crazy estimation of things.  Isn’t their revolutionary government the most insane scheme yet in the last 100 years of our history? How can they appoint President Duterte himself as heading the new order? How can that be when Mr. Duterte is already the country’s Chief Executive?  Mr. Duterte will topple himself as President and next becomes the head of a new government?  Idiocy of the first degree!  Seeing the utter stupidity of it all, Mr. Duterte dismissed the bizarre thought outright, saying: “I don’t know anyone from those floating a revolutionary government.  That is not my work.” He knew it was nothing but the work of nuts that rightfully belong to the mental hospital.  Ouch!
