THE Lingayen Police Station arrested 13 persons caught engaged in illegal cockfighting along Don Claudio St., in Barangay Pangapisan North in Lingayen, and wondered if the gambling was prompted by the recent distribution of allotted financial assistance from the DSWD’s Social Amelioration Program (SAP).

According to P/Lt. Col. Theodore Perez, Lingayen police chief, the station received a tip from a concerned citizen about a group of men in their barangay, squatted and bunched together watching cockfight. He sent a combined team from the station and the Provincial Intelligence Unit who raided the area.

The thirteen (13) suspects arrested for illegal gambling were identified as Oliver Reyes, Mario Quimson, Jake Estrada, Jimson Vallo, Angel Cancino, Enrico Casaclang, Jayson Mojeno, Jose Manuel, Carlo Tiangson, Carlos Gutierrez, Eisiah John Cruz and Joel Ventayen, all are from Barangay Pangapisan and Poblacion.

Authorities seized 8 fighting cocks, P140,870. cash and other paraphernalia.

Perez said most are tricycle drivers, unemployed, and listed as beneficiaries of the SAP and they were caught a day after the release of the 2nd tranche of SAP from DSWD to 12,000 heads of the family in Lingayen.

Police is verifying if the suspects received their allotment. (Nora Dominguez)
