MORE than 2,000 workers in the services and transportation sector have lost their jobs in the region due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Nathaniel Lacambra, regional director of the Department of Labor and Employment.

Lacambra said most of those who lost their jobs are those who are in hotel and restaurant and transportation sectors.

He said ‘Quick Response Team’ has been formed by DOLE Region 1 to reach out and help displaced workers by determining initially if the terminated workers received their separation benefits, leave credits and certificate of employment.

Lacambra acknowledged the efforts of some employers in the region who paid their employees their 13th month pay in advance to help them cope with the impact of the ordered community quarantine.

DOLE will also implement a program to provide earning opportunities to those who’ve lost their jobs by making face masks due to its high demand today.

DOLE also has programs for the unemployed such as negocart, rolling stores and vegetable vending ready for implementation once the Recovery Law 2 is enacted. (Nora Dominguez)
