PNP-AFP ready to thwart NPA rebels at the borders, say

PANGASINAN has been declared insurgency-free since last year but still government troops cannot be complacent because the insurgents may just be waiting for the opportunity to strike.

This was the situation described by P/Colonel Redrico Maranan, police provincial director, to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan on Monday, as he pointed out that Pangasinan calls for a wide area of operation in order to ward off the threats of the rebel if any.

He revealed there are two guerrilla fronts in Pangasinan–the Kilusan Larangang Gerilya Sierra Madre front in Eastern Pangasinan and KLG, the Tar-Zam (Tarlac-Zambales) front in  Western Pangasinan.

To address the two fronts, Maranan said the police in Pangasinan have two mobile companies one in the east and another in the west to assist the Armed Forces of the Philippines in securing the border areas.

The two mobile companies were also tasked to secure vital installations: San Roque Dam Power Project in San Manuel and the Sual Coal-fired Power Plant.

He admitted that there have been sightings of bands of rebels in the border areas but there have not been any armed encounter between the government troops and the New People’s Army.

Given these sightings, Maranan assured the provincial board members that the national and the provincial task forces have the situation well under control and a strategy is in place for an appropriate approach in dealing with smaller province insurgents.

He added that while it appears that the rebels have no plans to disturb the peace today, there are intelligence reports that indicate that some have been embedded with the business and labor sectors.

Nonetheless, he assured the board members that there is nothing to be alarmed about as the government forces are prepared to stop their incursion into Pangasinan and ready to thwart any threat to protect the people of Pangasinan from harm. (Leonardo Micua)
