AN all-organic herbal medicine developed by a Pangasinense as prevention and cure for patients experiencing mild symptoms of COVID-19 was endorsed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for technical review and recommendation.

The herbal medicine developed by Jaime Imbat of Barangay Cablong, Pozorrubio town that could be vaporized and inhaled in closed condition by COVID-19 patients with mild symptoms has been endorsed by Armando Gacal, DOST regional director.

Imbat tentatively called his herbal medicine Sonyas Phlegms, and will soon be produced by his own company, JPI Enterprise, in Pozorrubio.

He said Sonyas Phlegms is a combination of several extracts from local herbal plants proven many times in the past for their effectiveness in controlling common colds, cough, flu, and pneumonia and remodified to fight COVID-19.

Gacal endorsed the work of Imbat to Dr. Maria Lourdes Otayza, chairperson of the Region 1 Health Research and Development Committee and medical center chief II of the Mariano Marcos Memorial Medical Hospital and Medical Center in Batac, Ilocos Norte.

The herbal medicine, according to Imbat, comes in the semi-powder form, for easy heating and vaporization, for inhalation by patients experiencing pneumonia-like-condition such as COVID-19.

He suggested that if there are two or more patients in the family suffering the same medical condition, they could be put in a closed tent to inhale the vaporized Sonyas Phlegms with the use of a tunnel tube.

The vaporized herbal medicine will help loosen the hardened phlegm in the throat that blocks the passage of air.  He expressed confidence that a COVID-19 patient will be on the road to recovery in a matter of two days.

Imbat said if the herbal medicine gets the recommendation for approval by the Department of Health and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), his company, JPI Enterprise, will enlist the support of partners in the mass production of Sonyas Phlegms. (Leonardo Micua)
