Honest tricycle driver returns laptop, P350,000

TO a tricycle driver, a single father with three children to support, honesty is one virtue that he has kept since he started riding tricycles for livelihood and has found self-fulfillment in returning valuables left by his passengers.

His advocacy led him to return a bag he found on a road shoulder the morning of June 30 while he was traveling along San Manuel, Tarlac that contained a laptop, cash and cheques worth P350,000 to its owner.

Lloyd Feliciano, 35, from Barangay Carmen East in Rosales town stopped to pick up a black bag on a road shoulder but was initially scared to open it because it could be a bomb. He decided to open it because the owner could be looking for it.

On seeing a laptop, cash and cheques, he searched for a calling card or any number that could lead to the owner and found one.

The number he called was of the owner’s helpers and left word that he would turn over the black bag that belonged to Feliciano to the Rosales Municipal Police Station and would wait for the owner.

Within an hour, the owner, Allan Ramos, a businessman, arrived to claim the black bag with its contents intact.

To show his appreciation, Ramos rewarded Feliciano P2,000 cash and a promise to give him employment he could consider.

Ramos, who is into poultry business, said he was unaware his bag fell off from a tricycle when he stopped to check the tires and had no clue where he lost it.

Feliciano is a single father with three children under his care. He has been working as tricycle driver for 15 years and he had similar experiences of finding valuables left by his passengers, mostly cellular phones and returned them.

He said he always gave them back to the owners “because it feels good if you do good to other people and for the owner to not worry”.

“It’s hard if you keep something that you did not work hard for. Karma might even get back at you,” he said and advised people not to keep something that is not theirs. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
