Parents need guidance for children’s education

It is becoming more evident that COVID-19 will be with us for a long time.

Perhaps the economy will survive the onslaught but the bigger questions in all parents’ minds are: When will our children be able to continue their education?  Can our children’s schools have the capability to provide for virtual classrooms? How can my children learn if we can’t afford to own tablets and pay for internet service?

To date, many public schools’ dates for enrollment remain tentative. Worse, these schools cannot tell if they would have the capability to conduct virtual lessons since most teachers have not been trained.

The situation in Pangasinan calls for local governments to study and plan how they can mitigate the situation, preparing for the virtual education as directed by the Department of Education is the only remaining option. But there is still no information about which schools (communities) in Pangasinan can actually be served by internet and with what tools.

For the benefit of parents, it behooves the provincial government to lead the way in collaboration with the division public and private schools, colleges and universities in a symposium and planning meetings to provide the guidelines.  Foremost, the provincial government must point to areas and concerns that need help from their town and city governments.

Parents need to plan, but this can be done only with information that helps empower them. Without it, quality education of future generations of Pangasinenses is at risk. Lest we forget, quality health and education are what make citizens productive.

Purity of heart

WHEN flights are canceled, passengers suffer the most, especially the transients and plain folk without relatives in the Big City.  Unemployed, starving and short of cash amid the Covid-19 crisis, they are forced to sleep at roadsides or under flyovers near the NAIA airports while waiting for their tickets to be rebooked.  Compounding their woes are erratic airline schedules that are, sad to say, often convoluted due to inconsistent quarantine protocols by bumbling government officials. It took no less than President Duterte to give comfort to the hundreds of stranded passengers, ordering their free stay at the airport restaurants that are closed, and at VIP lounges as well, including provisions for free food until they have finally boarded their planes.  Mr. Duterte even assured them pocket money upon leaving.  If that’s not purity of heart for the people, what is?
