10 “korokor” fishermen arrested in Dagupan

TEN fishermen were arrested by the joint Maritime Police and the Dagupan City police in the early morning of July 7 while fishing in the territorial water off Bonuan Tondaligan.

The 10 were reportedly fishing about 10 kilometers from the shoreline, using a long net called “korokor” without any permit/license to show.

The “korokor” also known as “kalokor is a grant given to the fishermen under the pro-poor program jointly funded by the former Dagupan City administration and the Department of Agriculture.

Arrested were Jayson Gonzales, 21; Joker Gonzales, 23; Marty Manaois, 29; Samuel Harvasa, 33; Aljon Cagauioa, 26; Jonathan Ramos, 22; Mark Lawrence Caguioa, 24; Michael Manuel, 34; Virgilio Solis, 27; and Jaypee Manaois, 27. all from Barangay Pugaro in Dagupan City.

They were charged for violations Republic Act 10654 or the Philippine Fisheries Act of 1998.

The joint 102nd Maritime Police Station at Tondaligan Park and the Dagupan Police were conducting a seaborne patrol when they chanced upon the fishermen.

Confiscated by the police from the fishermen were: one fishing net more or less 100 meters long, the motor banca and three kilos of assorted fish.

The fishermen claimed they have been using fishnet since it was given to them in 2014. (Leonardo Micua)
