THE provincial health office has alerted the public against WILD diseases with the onset of the rainy season where cases are expected to rise.

Dr. Anna Ma. Teresa de Guzman said WILD stand for Water-borne, Influenza, Leptospirosis and Dengue.

She said there were 2,735 cases with 13 deaths from water-borne diseases like acute gastro enteritis diseases during January 1 to June 8 this year, compared to 4,773 cases with 27 deaths, same period last year.

She said this year’s cases are 45 percent lower compared to last year but the rainy season has just started and advised residents to boil drinking water and for people preparing foods to keep their hands clean.

For dengue, she said while cases this year are lower by 50%, 970 cases with nine deaths have been recorded this year compared to last year’s 1,191 cases with only two deaths, the fatality rate is higher.

De Guzman said the deaths could have been caused during the quarantine when access to transportation was practically nil.

Influenza cases kept Rural Health Units busy but there is no available data.

On leptospirosis, De Guzman said there were seven cases with one death. Last year, there were 13 cases with three deaths, she added. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
