WHILE the province was busy looking after COVID-19 contagion, 935 dengue cases with nine mortalities were recorded to date.

Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Anna de Guzman said the deaths could have been caused by the strict community quarantine when the mobility of people is limited and access to transportation is restricted.

She said the people who had the symptoms simply failed to go to hospitals for treatment and the province has a limited supply of blood bags in different blood banks in the province because of difficulties organizing bloodletting activities when mass gatherings are not allowed.
De Guzman reiterated the need to keep the surroundings clean to prevent breeding grounds for mosquitoes, especially with the onset of the rainy season.

Being closely monitored for the high number of dengue cases are San Carlos City, Bugallon, Sta. Barbara, Mangaldan and Binmaley.

She also warned Pangasinenses about other common ailments during the rainy season such as leptospirosis and gastroenteritis, among others.

As of May 18, there were six recorded cases of leptospirosis in the province, one of whom has died. (Jerick Pasiliao)
