Cops arrest driver who stashed bottles of gin inside coffin

CHARGES have been filed at the Prosecutor’s Office against the driver of a hearse who was caught in a quarantine checkpoint in Barangay Biec in Binmaley hiding bottles of gin inside a coffin on Tuesday.

P/Lt. Col. Brendon Palisoc, town police chief of Binmaley said Jeffrey Velasco, 23, from Barangay Talibaew, Calasiao town and driver of Abalos Funeral Homes, was charged for violation of Article 151 of the Revised Penal Code or the Resistance and disobedience to a person in authority, Republic Act 11332 or the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Concern and RA 11469 or An Act Declaring the Existence of a National Emergency arising from the coronavirus disease 2019.

Bottles of gin found inside the coffin

Palisoc said they sensed that something was wrong because of the traveling speed of the hearse and the driver suddenly tried to evade the police checkpoint.

Police chased after the hearse; it was cornered in Barangay Biec.

“Upon inspection, we saw inside the casket three boxes of liquor (gin). Each box contains 24 bottles of gin,” Palisoc said.

Palisoc said Velasco and the funeral car were released after he posted bail; the liability of the of the funeral car owner is still being determined.
