THE island town of Anda’s strict implementation of the lockdown for Enhanced Community Quarantine has resulted in positive results: It is COVID-19 free.

Mayor Joganie Rarang told The PUNCH that his town has not recorded a single case of COVID-19 since the lockdown was strictly implemented to the extent that no one has been permitted to enter the island municipality except for authorized persons outside residents only (APOR) certified by the Interagency Task Force (IATF).

The young mayor also strictly requires vehicles and all their occupants in the town to be disinfected by misting.

There are about 12, 905 families in Anda affected by ECQ supported by the local government with relief goods (rice and canned goods).

Meanwhile, the local government has appealed to their constituents and to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) that since only 5,200 heads out of 12,905 households, were listed as beneficiaries of Social Amelioration Fund, that this fund should be redistributed and awarded to the poorest of the poor including senior citizens who receive only P500 monthly pension, and those who have no livelihood.

The town’s families were also provided seedlings for the residents to help them become self-sufficient in food.

Meanwhile, since 70% of the residents are into fishing, they have been allowed to continue with their livelihood to maintain fish supply in the different market in the province.

Rarang said the ‘no-fish pen‘ policy was enforced last year, there has been no fish kill and the bangus production has been increasing inside fish cages.

The local government also continues to address the spread of African Swine Flu among backyard hog raisers in four barangays: Barangay Awag, Poblacion, Mal-ong and San Jose. A state of calamity was declared to contain the spread of the disease in other barangays.

Rarang said the lockdown also provided residents the opportunity to be more conscious of the need to protect the coastline of Anda, particularly the white sand in Tondol Beach. (Nora Dominguez)
