THE rate of Index Crimes in the province has decreased drastically since the implementation of the Luzon-wide Enhanced Community Quarantine a month ago.

Latest statistics coming from the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office show only 30 recorded index crimes from March 15 to April 16, as compared to 176 index crimes recorded on the same period last year.

Index crimes refer to eight crimes the Philippine National Police (PNP) combines to produce its annual crime index. These offenses include crimes against persons – namely murder, homicide, physical injury, and rape; plus crimes against property – such as robbery, theft, carjacking, and cattle rustling.

The report cited only two cases of murder, compared to last year’s 13 cases; one homicide case this year against last year’s seven cases; 8 physical injury cases compared to 2019’s 55 cases.

Only three rape cases recorded this year compared to same period last year’s 28 cases; four cases of robbery compared to seven cases included last year; 10 theft cases from 47 last year; while carjacking and motorcycle theft recorded only two case from five in 2019.

P/Col. Redrico Maranan, provincial director, attributed the decrease to the boundary checkpoints and curfew hours imposed because of the enhanced community quarantine.

Meanwhile, non-index crimes, or violation of special laws such as illegal logging and the likes have also decreased 934 to 456 by 51%. (Ahikam Pasion)
