THE Bureau of Fire Protection (PFP) in Pangasinan revealed that while there were 85 fires in the first two months this year compared to 84 for the same period last year, there were lesser structural fires.

F/Supt. Noel Gagalac, provincial fire marshal, told the KBP Forum on Thursday that the number of structural fires this year was 32 compared to 53 last year. Non-structural fires accounted for 50 this year and only 29 last year.

Gagalac clarified that structural fires include the fires that razed buildings and houses.

He said non-structural fires include grass fires which often happen when lighted cigarette butts are thrown intentionally or unintentionally on heaps of dried leaves and grasses in many areas.

Rubbish fires occur when residents try to dispose of their garbage by burning them in their backyard or vacant lots and later became almost uncontrollable till firemen respond and extinguish them.

Meanwhile, there were three transport/vehicle fires that happened this year compared to only one last year.

Gagalac said all fire stations in the provinces simultaneously conducted motorcade in their respective jurisdictions last March 1 to kick off the month-long observance of Fire Prevention month.
