INCREASING SUICIDE CASES ALARMING

IN a bid to lower the alarming and increasing number of suicide cases in Pangasinan, the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office has set into motion the creation of an organized crisis inter-agency action committee.

According to P/Colonel Redrico Maranan, PPPO director, 107 suicide cases were reported last year and it has become imperative to establish higher awareness and a protocol to address the incidence of suicide in the county.

Maranan said the recommendation for the inter-agency body will be submitted to the office of Governor Amado Espino III for approval.

The proposal will seek to establish the first crisis inter-agency action committee at the Pangasinan PPO and will be set up soon in other agencies.

The provincial government, Department of Social Welfare and Development Office, Provincial Health Office, DEPED, DILG were among the offices invited to take active roles.

The committee will study various approaches for intervention in high risks situations involving vulnerabilities of individuals that show symptoms of severe depression.

Maranan said he hopes that with proper monitoring and raising awareness, the suicide rate in the province will decrease. (Nora Dominguez)
