Italian-Filipino PUM arrested for violating quarantine

A 51-year-old Filipino–Italian balikbayan from Toreno Italy who arrived in Calasiao town was considered a Person Under Monitoring (PUM) and ended up arrested for refusing home quarantine as part of the measures to curb the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

P/Lt. Col. Joseph Fajardo Jr., chief of the Calasiao Police Station, said the balikbayan arrived in Barangay Ambonao on March 12 for a vacation in his hometown.

Fajardo said health authorities subjected him to a 14-day self-quarantine because he came from Italy but his neighbors reported that he was violating the imposed self-quarantine.

When the police together with members of the Covid-19 inter-agency task force went to verify the information, he was caught in a drinking session with other people outside his house.

The balikbayan was arrested March 16 for violation of Republic Act 11332 or the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Health Concern Act.

According to Fajardo, while he did not show any symptoms of COVID-19 he was ordered to continue his self-quarantine at his house. He was released Tuesday after putting the required bail.

This time, barangay officials are closely monitoring the movements of the balikbayan. (Jerick Pasiliao)
