PRE-FIRE PREVENTION MONTH

TO say that the month of March is “Fire Prevention Month” already sounds satirical to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Dagupan City that has already responded to 10 grassfires and one residential fire incident in this city and other neighboring towns in the first two months of 2020.

Dagupan City Fire Chief Inspector Bryan Pocyao said the common cause of fire among residential and structural buildings is electrical short circuits while discarded cigarette butts and unattended burning of garbage cause the grassfires.

“Fire prevention month is not a joyful celebration. It requires us to be vigilant and aware. We should also learn from the previous fire incidents,” he said.

BFP has been regularly conducting fire safety inspection of business establishments to determine if they are compliant with the fire safety codes before the issuance of the fire safety certificate.

Meanwhile, the city fire department also lined up several activities to raise awareness about the fire prevention tips in the barangay level while barangay officials are trained as the first responders, Pocyao said.

This year’s theme: “Matuto Ka, Sunog, Iwasan Na,” aims to underscore the need for the public to be safety conscious to prevent fire. (Jerick Pasilaio)
