A state of calamity has been declared in San Carlos City in response to the widespread infection of the African Swine Fever (ASF) that hit the city’s Barangay Calobaoan.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod, headed by Vice Mayor Joseres Resuello adopted the Resolution No. 20-008 authored by Councilor Elpidio Fermin Jr on February 12  declaring the city under a state of calamity on the revelation of the Office of the City Veterinary, the Provincial Veterinary Office and the Department of Agriculture that “ASF Viral DNA Detected” in blood samples from the hogs.

Mayor Julier Resuello, together with the City Veterinary Office headed by Dr. Solomon Gabuyan and the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council led by Bernabe Bacani strongly recommended the declaration on Feb. 12.

Meanwhile, the declaration of a state of calamity will allow the city government to access emergency funding coming from the national government to fund its operations against ASF.

“We assure our Kabaleyan that the city government is doing everything in its power to contain and control the situation,” the statement added as Mayor Resuello urged residents not to panic as he asked pig farm owners and backyard raisers to help prevent further spread of the ASF.

A total lockdown of all pig populations within the one-kilometer radius of ground zero is already in effect.

Residents, backyard-raisers and farm/s were already briefed on Feb. 13 about the procedure of following the protocol of culling within the one-km radius where the first infection occurred.
