THREE individuals in Region 1 were listed as persons under investigation (PUI) suspected to have novel Coronvirus 2019 (nCov) infection, but no Pangasinense has been suspected of being infected.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Anna de Guzman said her office has not received any message or advisory from the Department of Health (DOH) about need to trace PUIs.

De Guzman said her office is coordinating with municipal and city health offices in the province for the close monitoring of suspected nCov cases, particularly, to monitor fishermen who may have contacts with Chinese fishermen.

Close monitoring is in place in the towns of Sual and Infanta and Alaminos City where foreign vessels dock and in other towns with returning Overseas Filipino Workers.

“Even sellers of ukay-ukay are advised to expose their items under the intense heat of the sun to kill any virus,” she said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Roland Joseph Mejia, Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) chief based in Dagupan City, confirmed there are three suspected cases in Ilocos “but fortunately it’s not here in Pangasinan”.

Mejia also branded as fake news posted in social media about a PUI allegedly confined in R1MC and said R1MC has an isolation room that was used during the outbreak of SARS and MERSCov.

Dr. Rowena Virrey, in- charge of Hospital Infection Prevention and Control Management Office of the R1MC, reminded the public that health workers are at risk in acquiring an infection and appealed to would be patients to keep the masks on their faces.

“When you say Coronavirus, it’s a virus, it’s self- limiting and it depends on the immune system of a person,” she said adding that among the airborne diseases, they are more concerned with measles which is more of a killer than that of nCov because measles is airborne.

She added that the best defense against nCov is to be well-nourished, have enough sleep and rest and have a good lifestyle.

Virrey appealed to people to avoid spreading fake news on nCov. “You’re not doing good for humanity. If you don’t know the information, if you are not an expert, just shut up,” she said.

“Itulog mo na lang, bes, at huwag ka nang mag-tsismis, kaysa naghahanap ka lagi ng ikakalat mong maling impormasyon,” she said. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
