THE Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Office 1 will provide P500,000 worth of free-range native chicken and organic feeds to a cooperative in Asingan, the first town in Sixth District envisioned to be model for the industry in Pangasinan.

A memorandum of agreement was signed Wednesday for implementation of the Innovative Family Enterprise Development (IFED) thru Improved Chicken-Range Production program by officials of DA and the local government led by Mayor Carlos Lopez Jr. with beneficiaries of Nagkaisa Multipurpose Cooperative.

The agreement will call for the training of beneficiaries by DA representatives for the raising of free-range native chicken for healthy living as it is chemical-free.

Free-range chicken freely roam the area where they are raised and feed only on grasses, plants or other natural foods.

Dr. Jovita Datuin, chief science research specialist of DA-Regional Field Office 1, said that free-range chicken production is cost-effective and sustainable livelihood project for the family.

What we are eating now is antibiotic-laden chicken,” she said. “More on pro-biotics,” she added.

IFED was started four years ago in Bauang, La Union after the necessary technology has been developed.  It was expanded in Sta, Catalina, Ilocos Sur; Bacnotan and San Juan in La Union; and  in Mangaldan, Sta. Barbara, Labrador in Pangasinan.

Native chicken hatches 60 pieces of eggs per year but with the improvement of breeding, housing, feeding and health management, they are expected to hatch 200 eggs per year, Datuin said. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
