Mini-dam in Asingan sought for farmlands

THE town government of Asingan has requested the National Irrigation Authority to build a mini dam in its jurisdiction to irrigate 100 hectares of farmlands.

Asingan Mayor Carlos Lopez Jr. said a mini dam is needed to benefit Barangays Ariston East, Ariston West, Bantog, and Baro.

The NIA conducted an ocular inspection in the area last Tuesday.

Lopez said NIA built an irrigation canal from 2009 to 2014 but no water flowed from the re-regulating pond located at San Roque Dam in the nearby town of San Manuel.

“The water from the pond does not reach us, as farmlands upstream divert the waters into their own areas, leaving us with none”, said Lopez.

Currently, farmers only rely on deep wells in their farms in search of water sources.

The proposed mini dam will be built along the nearby Agno River, which is adjacent to the four barangays.

NIA pledged to Lopez that the construction of the mini dam will begin soon as the design and budget proposal are completed. (Ahikam Pasion)
