CORAL DESTRUCTION BY MV CHEMATIC

THE team from the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute has finished its underwater check to assess damages on the corals in the area where a foreign vessel ran aground for three weeks last month in the coastal water off Barangay Patar in Bolinao.

MV Chematic was stranded at the natural breakwater made of solid Century-old rocks composed of corals in the area.

Mayor Alfonso Celeste said he expects the report on the extent of the damage to be submitted by first week of February.

Celeste said the report will form part of the claim for damages that will be submitted to the shipping company.

He said the claim will include expenses incurred by the barangay in hosting a composite team from different law enforcement agencies that conducted inspection and investigation, lost opportunities of the resort and shed owners on account of the lockdown in the area. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
