American, Aussie veterans set to join local vets

75th LINGAYEN GULF LANDING ANNIVERSARY

AMERICAN and Australian war veterans will join their counterparts in Pangasinan in another nostalgic reunion during the two-day commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Lingayen Gulf Landings and 13th Pangasinan Veterans Day on January 8 to 9.

Both commemorations will be led by Governor Amado Espino III, members of the provincial board and other ranking officials of the Pangasinan provincial government.

U.S. and Australian troops were part of the allied troops led by General Douglas Mac Arthur that stormed the beaches of Pangasinan on January 9, 1945 to begin the liberation of Luzon from the Japanese occupation forces.       

The highlight of the commemoration on January 8 is a lecture forum called “Bakal tan Awaran” on the Historic Lingayen Gulf Landings and World War II to be held at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center organized by the National Historical and Cultural Commission (NHCP) and the Center for Pangasinan Studies (CPS) headed by Prof. Perla Legaspi.

The commemorative program at the Veterans Memorial Park the following day will be marked b a Thanksgiving Mass and Wreath-laying ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Park.

The Royal Australian Navy Marker at the west side of the Pangasinan Veterans Park will be inaugurated and the awarding of the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal at the Sison Auditorium under the auspices of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Secretariat will also be held.

High officials of both the U.S. and Australian embassies in the Philippines are expected to attend.  

Meanwhile, a medical mission for the surviving Pangasinan veterans and their families will be held at Pangasinan Training and Development Center 1 and Commemorative Luncheon at PTDC 2.

The film “Liberation Trails” featuring the heroism of the late Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos, and films titled “Unsurrendered” and “Valor” will be shown in the evening. (Leonardo Micua)
