34 hogs in Binmaley found ASF-positive

THE 34 hogs raised in a backyard piggery in Barangay Linoc, Binmaley were found positive of the African Swine Fever (ASF) based on the results of blood samples released last Wednesday.

Dr. Jovito Tabarejos, the acting provincial veterinarian, in a phone interview confirmed that the 34 infected hogs had died from it.

He said the infection surfaced in December based on the statement of the owner, Elma Ferrer.

Tabarejos’ office conducted the tests after Ferrer reported the case on Dec. 27.

There are no more live hogs in Ferrer’s piggery.

Checkpoints were established to implement the no-movement policy in the barangay which has only two entry and exit points.

Tabarejos’ team returned to Linoc last Thursday to conduct new tests on other backyard piggeries.

He said the source of the ASF is still being determined since Ferrer claimed no new pigs were bought from other areas.

Because of the new cases, Tabarejos said Pangasinan’s declaration as ASF-free will be deferred.

Meanwhile, Tabarejos appealed to the people not to be afraid of consuming pork as the ASF virus is not transmitted from hogs to humans. (Philstar Wire Service/ECV)
