SUAL – A cargo vessel en route to Indonesia from China sought clearance to dock in Sual’s port Tuesday evening to leave behind its chief engineer who died while at sea.

P/Captain Ferdwin Sernio, Sual police chief, said the vessel M/V Lada, with Flag/Registry Russia/St. Petersburg, was forced to dock in the port owned by Team Energy of the Sual Coal Power Plant in Barangay Pangascasan.

The ship’s chief engineer, Vostryakov Nikolay, was found dead in his cabin and was estimated to have have been dead for two days because his body was already in a state of decomposition.

Manuel Cruz, the representative Wilhelmsen-Smith Bell Shipping Inc. confirmed that he died of cardiac arrest.

According to P/Col. Redrico Maranan, police provincial director, there was no sign of foul play in the death of the victim.  He said, a tug boat was sent to get the cadaver of the seaman.

“The port in Sual was the closest port in the area, which is why they decided to seek permission to dock there”, said Sernio.

As soon as the ship docked, the cadaver was then immediately taken by a funeral service accredited by the shipping company.

The ship left the port on December 11. (Nora Dominguez/Ahikam Pasion)
