FIFTY-one police officers  in Pangasinan have been deputized by the Land Transportation Office Regional Office 1.

According to P/Colonel Redrico Maranan, provincial police director, the deputized policemen who completed the training and seminars conducted by the LTO, are authorized to issue traffic violation tickets and LTO temporary operator’s permit (TOP) to erring motorists in the province.

Maranan said the deputized police officers will boost Pangasinan Police’s ‘Oplan Balik  Disiplina sa Kalsada’ that seeks to reduce vehicular traffic accidents on the road.

The issuance of TOP by the LTO provides local government units without local ordinances on traffic violations an effective tool in imposing discipline.

Since the program was launched last July, Maranan said vehicular accidents in Pangasinan have dropped by 50 percent.

Maranan, meanwhile, warned the deputized police officers against misuse of the TOP as an occasion to extort from erring drivers. He said, any police found to be abusing or exploiting the use of TOP will be subject to a disciplinary action or dismissal of service.

He emphasized that all traffic rules and regulations in should be enforced  by the police properly and lawfully, and should not be abused. (Nora  Dominguez)
