SAN QUINTIN – A mother here gave birth to her third child inside a tricycle while en route to the town’s Rural Health Unit (RHU) to deliver her child. But instead of midwives, it was the firefighters who responded the emergency call, assisted and saved the day for mother and child.

FO2 Franklin Nipales was on standby duty Monday morning, when he heard the tricycle driver screaming for help and quickly rushed a team to the tricycle.

On reaching the tricycle, the team saw the passenger, later identified as Marissa Lado of Barangay Cabalaoangan, already began giving birth inside the tricycle.

“When we arrived, I saw the child’s head already coming out. Our colleagues decided to assist then and there”, he said.

Nipales, a nurse by profession, delayed no further, as he saw the baby’s umbilical cord coiled around the baby’s neck.

“The baby could choke and die. We immediately cut it, and conducted a newborn care”, he said.

The mother and baby were rushed to the RHU which was some 10 meters away.

Both the baby and the mother are in stable condition.

The authorities declared the baby boy healthy.

“I am grateful for the experience”, said Nipales. “It makes me more determined to perform our sworn duty saving lives”, he added. (Ahikam Pasion)
