AGRICULTURE Secretary William Dar said there is no new outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Pangasinan.

Dar said the feedback he gets is there is no new outbreak “but the threat of the African swine fever remains that’s why we have to elevate our quarantine system.”

Dar, who was in Urdaneta City and Rosales town, said since Region 3 was the most devastated by ASF infection the provinces of Bulacan and Pampanga were cordoned off to prevent its spread.”

He said “sentinel approach” is employed randomly by placing five hogs in one area and are observed if these will get sick or not.

The P30,000 loan assistance to each backyard hog raiser is still available at zero interest payable in three years at the Land Bank of the Philippines, Dar said.

The recent outbreak affected almost 80,000 hogs, or only less than one per cent based on the 13 million heads, he said.

He also echoed the assurance of hog raisers that there is enough supply of hogs in the country.

Dar was joined by local officials in Urdaneta City led by Mayor Julio Parayno and in Rosales headed by Mayor Susan Casareno, Pangasinan Fifth District Rep. Ramon Guico III, Abono partylist Rep. Conrad Estrella, Samahan ng Industriyang Agrikultura chair Rosendo So, farmers and other stakeholders in eating lechon and other pork dishes that show that there’s nothing to worry about consuming pork.
