SOME 8,000 children from Dagupan and Alaminos cities packed the CSI Stadia on December 11 to 12 to participate in the 6th Children’s Summit sponsored by the City Supermarket Inc, with the cooperation of the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Pangasinan Provincial Government.

The summit with the theme “Karapatang Pambata: Patuloy Pahalagahan at Gampanan Tungo sa Magandang Kinabukasan” is the annual project of CSI’s corporate social responsibility.

Former Dagupan City Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, who is back as president of her family-owned CSI Group of Companies, welcomed the children, many of whom were accompanied by their parents and teachers.

Guest speaker during the opening of the summit was First District Board Member Orange Humilde who lauded the activity to bring children of Pangasinan and Dagupan City together to enhance their skills, knowledge and personal attributes.

DepEd Regional Director Tolentino Aquino directed both City Schools Division Superintendents Joy Fernandez of Dagupan City and Lorna Bugayong of Alaminos City to send pupils and students to the summit.

Fernandez said it has always been the CSI that bankrolled the Children’s Summit from the beginning, not the city government even when she was city mayor.

“In my long years as an entrepreneur and as a public servant, there is no experience more humbling and delightful than to engage with the children,” Fernandez said.

Under her stewardship, Dagupan City was adjudged as the most child-friendly city in the country in the independent component city category in 2018.

Fernandez recalled that previous Children’s Summit focused on science and technology, journalism, music and arts festival and gave children a chance to demonstrate their talents.

She said it was always the children of Dagupan City that participated but this year, CSI included children from Alaminos City where the company operates a branch.

Gov. Amado Espino III provided chartered buses for the children from Alaminos City.

This year’s summit showcased knowledge booths where children played different games and some advocating personal hygiene. A “Himig Pamasko” choral contest and 3×3 basketball for kids and teeners. (Leonardo Micua)
