Tourism cops set to be deployed

LINGAYEN –The Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO) will soon deploy its tourism police unit to specifically man tourist spots in the province.

PPPO provincial director P/Col. Redrico Maranan said the unit will be composed of policemen who are multilingual and trained by the Department of Tourism (DOT).

He said he’s only awaiting guidance and approval from mayors to identify the tourist spots where the unit will be assigned.

The deployment of tourism cops, Maranan said, was decided due to the projected increase in arrival of tourists in the province.

“Because if a crime or anything negative happens in one of our tourist spots it will not be good in the  marketing of our province (to tourists),” he said.

Initially, some 30 tourism cops will be assigned along the Lingayen Baywalk on a 24/7 after their training with DOT, Maranan said.

PPPO, Maranan said, is making an inventory of tourist spots in the province accredited by the DOT to be able to estimate the needed number of policemen to be assigned to the unit. (Helen Martin)
