Speaker Eugenio Perez remembered

BASISTA Local Government officials laid a wreath on the marker for the late Speaker Eugenio Padlan Perez on the occasion of his 123rd birthday anniversary, in Barangay Obong in Basista town formerly part of San Carlos City.

Basista Mayor JR Resuello said the activity was held to commemorate the Perez’s contributions to the country, having served as the first Speaker who was born on November 13, 1896.

He was elected as councilor of San Carlos City in 1922-1925 and became lawmaker from 1928-1957 and was the first speaker of the first congress from 1946 to 1953. He served under Presidents Manuel Roxas and Elpidio Quirino.

According to Mayor Resuello, he will initiate a dialogue with Perez’s relatives to donate the portion of land on which the Perez’s marker stands on Perez family lot so that it can be developed as Basista’s landmark.

November 13 of each year is a public holiday in Pangasinan commemorating the birthday of the first speaker of the house under Republic Act 6721 enacted on March 20, 1989 to commemorate the birthday of the late speaker of the house Eugenio Perez.

Meanwhile, the Dagupan City Government led by Mayor Brian Lim and city officials and employees, also held a wreath-laying ceremony at the bust of the late Speaker in Barangay Herero-Perez.

Lim said Perez was the first political superstar from Pangasinan and it was only proper to remember Perez’s birthday to reflect on his accomplishments and sacrifices as a public servant. (Nora Dominguez)
