THE Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO) is set to launch a hotline backed by social workers after an alarming increase in suicide cases was noted while more persons are reportedly diagnosed with depression.

In an interview Thursday, P/Colonel Redrico Maranan, provincial director, said  Pangasinan PPO has handled 44 suicide cases since January. They either used, guns, poison, and jumped from tall buildings.

The hotline, he said, can help counsel individuals contemplating suicide and could also provide support to relatives or friends who experienced trauma of losing someone who committed suicide.

He said the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) already assists, especially minors, so a dedicated hotline for suicide cases will help.

“We will tie up with social workers for the establishment of suicide hotlines”, he said.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), depressive disorders affect an estimated 3.3 million Filipinos, with suicide rates in 2.5 males and 1.7 males per 100,000.  (Ahikam Pasion)
