No order to clear city street of fish vendors

THE Dagupan city government has not yet reached a decision on the plight of some 70 fish retailers along a road in front of the Dagupan City Fish Market whose area was targeted for clearing operations last November 10 by the City’s Anti-Hawking Task Force.

This was revealed by Aguedo Sta. Maria, the chief of the city market division, confirming that the retailers are still in their places since Mayor Brian Lim had not issued any order evicting them.

The city council passed a resolution last week asking the executive department to hold in abeyance its move to clear the roads where they are selling fish set last November 10 till Mayor Brian Lim arrives from a trip abroad.

Responding to the question of Councilor Teresa Coquia, the city council’s chairman on market, Sta. Maria said even if the retailers already talked to the mayor, no definite decision was made.

Coquia, during a committee hearing in the city council on November 14, suggested to Sta. Maria to allow the fish retailers to stay till after Christmas but Sta. Maria said he has no authority to allow it. Sta. Maria confessed that because of the big number of vendors in the city, they have run out of places to put them in.

He said he may suggest to the city executive to place the vendors instead beside Melee’s Restaurant. (Leonardo Micua)
