7 PNHS students bag major awards

INT’L EXHIBITION FOR YOUNG INVENTORS

SEVEN students of Pangasinan National High School in Lingayen bagged awards at the International Exhibition for Young Inventors (IEYI) in Indonesia from Oct. 22 to 26.

The winners were Jeremy Fortaleza (gold), Christian Vintayen, Carol Limos and Genesis Faith Orjalo (silver); Marianne Grace Hidalgo, Jeremy Fortaleza and Samantha Hazel Doroteo (bronze).

Doroteo also received silver award from Macau and Outstanding Invention Award from China while Vintayen got another TECHNOPOL Award from Russia and the JIL Encouragement Award from Japan.

Held at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition Business Station District, these students impressed judges with their invention and research on different aspects in international event participated in by students from 14 countries.

Doroteo’s entry was about a device for artificial heart and ears made of nanocrystals extracted from abaca.

The entry of Hidalgo and Fortaleza was about a smart meter that monitors electric consumption synched to a cellular phone while Limos and Orjalo’s entry was a device that detects the occurrence of landslide and earthquake alarm signal system. Vintayen’s was about an anti-dynamite fishing device.

Fortaleza’s other entry was on etorrent, a flexible flood barrier system that can also generate power out of floodwater

Their coaches are teachers Marianne Soriano, Gerald Soriano and Ma. Estrella Cabacungan.

IEYI started in 2004 as a part of the 100th anniversary celebration of Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation that provides an opportunity for students in a global platform to share their innovations.

Participants chose from six themes under innovative invention production that includes disaster management, education and recreation, food and agriculture, green technologies, safety and health and for special needs. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
