THE Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) in Dagupan City is set to inaugurate its Mental Health Regional Center to serve patients from Pangasinan and nearby provinces with mental health concerns.

Dr. Roland Mejia, R1MC director, said the building, located at the R1MC annex in Barangay Bonuan Binloc, and soon as its completed psychiatrists will be assigned regularly to attend to patients.

He said with this, it will be the only center for mental health in Region 1 and it will help patient suffering from schizophrenia or those with suicidal tendency.

As early as 1990s, mental health patients had to be endorsed to Baguio City, Mandaluyong City or Bataan.

This prompted the DOH  to include the program on mental health service concerns in R1MC’S five-year development plan.

Meanwhile, Mejia said the construction of the first Geriatric Building outside of Metro Manila, (to be funded by the World Health Organization and the national government), will start soon.

It will have a connecting bridge to the five-story Out-Patient Department of R1MC.

R1MC’s present 600 bed capacity will increase to 1,500 once the construction of two buildings, called Towers 1 and 2 that have seven-story each, with multi-level parking is completed. (PhilStar Wire Service)
