TWO shanties made of light materials were razed to the ground and a senior citizen died in a fire that broke at dawn Thursday at Barangay Mayombo in Dagupan City.

Fire arson investigator Andrew Pasana of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Dagupan City Station, said the incident was reported at 3:39 a.m. and was declared fire out at 5:04 a.m.

Pasana said initial investigation showed the fire started from the house occupied by Mario Cabansag, 64, another male named “Aping” and Jeremy Cabansag, 16, deaf person with disability, caused by an unattended open fire that Aping used to cook their meal before they head out to scavenge garbage.

Pasana said the coal fire could have burned some plastic materials that triggered the blaze.

“Aping and Jeremy were able to escape but Mario who was weak was trapped inside the burning shanty. The fire spread instantaneously around the shanty affected a neighboring house owned by Alvin Gomez, which is semi-concrete or made of concrete and light materials”, Pasana said.

“The damages based on our estimate amount to PHP1 million,” he said.

BFP-Dagupan was assisted by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and the Panda Fire Brigade Volunteers, Pasana said. (Helen Martin)
