IN anticipation of the onslaught of El Nino early next year, Fourth District Rep. Christopher de Venecia, along with officials of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), distributed 80 units of water pumps to farmers in the district last week.

Oscar Navata of NIA regional office, said NIA also turned over to the farmer-recipients the P27-M Labney-Balanay communal irrigation system that will benefit 100 farmers in San Jacinto.

De Venecia also conducted site visitation and consultation with the farmers of the other problems they might be encountering to determine if there are unforeseen consequences or problems from the implementation of the Free Irrigation Law.

De Venecia was joined by his parents, former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. and former Rep. Gina de Venecia, NIA Regional Director Angelito Miguel and Gaudencio de Vera.

Recipients of the water pumps are farmers from the different barangays of San Jacinto, Manaoag, San Fabian, Mangaldan and Dagupan City tilling rice, corn, vegetables and other crops.

The water pumps will be useful during the dry month when rains would be scanty and rivers are drying up, enabling farmers to plant cash crops in their fields, other than rice.

He said he is giving impetus to agriculture as this is the major source of livelihood of the people of Pangasinan, which has maintained its reputation as the food basket all over Region 1.

De Venecia is pushing for the approval of his pet bill in the 18th Congress, the Magna Carta of Young Farmers, which recognizes the important role that the farmers play for the country. (Leonardo Micua/Helen Martin)
