Dengue cases in Pangasinan 2% lower

LINGAYEN—Parents are finally responding to Provincial Health Office’s (PHO) campaign vs. dengue.

PHO recorded 7,133 dengue cases in the province from Jan.1 to Oct.14 this year, two percent lower than the 7,257 cases over the same period last year.

Provincial health officer Dr. Anna Teresa De Guzman said only 11 died this year compared to last year’s 25 deaths.

PHO’s top ten towns/cities on its watch list for their high number of dengue cases are: San Carlos City (560 cases); Bayambang (468); Malasiqui (387); Lingayen (364); Calasiao (289); Bugallon (286); Rosales (264); Bani (244); San Quintin (242); Anda (152) and Bolinao (152).

The highest number of dengue cases this year was recorded on August with 2,052 cases but this decreased to 1,863 on September.

The youngest dengue victim is a 10-month-old male and the oldest is a 90-year-old female.

Meanwhile, leptospirosis cases in the province is 67 percent lower this year, with 153 from Jan. to Oct. 14 as compared to last year over the same period with 253 cases.

“Only  22 died this year compared to last year’s 59,” De Guzman said.

In PHO’s watch list with high number of leptospirosis victims are: Mangatarem (13); Binmaley (8); Mangaldan (8); Sta. Barbara (6); Urdaneta City (5); Alaminos City (4); Asingan (4); Pozorrubio (4); Rosales (4); San Carlos City (4); San Fabian (4); and San Jacinto (4). (Helen Martin)
