LINGAYEN—Two Isuzu Elf trucks loaded with 45 and 40 heads of live swine, respectively, were temporarily intercepted by police and veterinary personnel manning a quarantine checkpoint along the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEx) in Barangay Bobonan, Pozorrubio on the night of September 22 before they were allowed to proceed to Baguio City.

The temporary interception was in compliance with the order of Gov. Amado Espino III   preventing the entry of hogs to prevent the possible spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the province, exempting for hogs in transit to La Union and Baguio through the TPLEx provided thee cargo is covered by veterinary certificates and shipping permits.

The first truck, driven by one Joel Mostrales, 34, of Brookspoint in Aurora Hill, Baguio City, was loaded with 45 hogs when it was intercepted at around 6:20 p.m. on September 22.  It loaded the hogs from a hog farm in Barangay Baldios, Sta. Ignacia, Tarlac and was en route to Baguio City when it was intercepted.

The second truck, driven by Julius Cortez, 41, of Lopez Jaena Street in Baguio, was loaded with 40 hogs and had just came from Camiling, Tarlac when it was intercepted at 7:35 a.m. that day.

Both shipments, which were consigned with the Baguio City Slaughterhouse, were inspected by Abraham Policarpio, the duty quarantine inspector, who found these were accompanied with pertinent documents, and the hogs that they carried were certified free from any dangerous communicable diseases.

After a thorough inspection, the two trucks were released and proceeded to their destinations.

Previous to this, P/Colonel Redrico Maranan, police provincial director, said there were up to 20 trucks loaded with some 300 to 400 live swine, that were intercepted and turned back to their points of origin ever since the PNP-Office of the Provincial Veterinarian set up quarantine checkpoints.

Quarantine checkpoints in all entry and exit points in Pangasinan continue although the Department of Agriculture said the swine disease in Rodriguez, Rizal and Antipolo City, and Guiguinto, Bulacan has been contained with the 1-7-10 protocol, 24/7. (Leonardo Micua)
