FOURTH District Rep. Christopher de Venecia is seeking to establish a museum in Dagupan City to serve as repository for masterpieces of national artists Victorio Edades and Salvador Bernal, both Dagupeños.

De Venecia said House Bill 2863 or “An Act Establishing the Edades and Bernal Museum in the City of Dagupan” is now to be read on second reading at the Lower House.

Edades, the Father of Modern Philippine Painting and Bernal, known as the master for contemporary Filipino theatre design were both from the 4th District.

During the committee hearing, De Venecia said “I would like to point out, with the illustrious life lived by these two national artists alone, really, substantial exhibits can already be created.”

De Venecia said other artworks of up and coming artists would also be displayed in the museum once it is constructed “Naming the museum “Edades and Bernal” would not limit it to the works of these two national artist,” he said.

He said the National Historical Commission and the National Museum are helping him in this.

“To be able to continue their legacies is to allow new generations to be able to do what they did and providing them an avenue to be able to do that,” he said.

Furthermore, establishing a museum will also help in boosting the tourism and culture in the district, he added.

Far from traditional museum, De Venecia said the museum can host workshops, talks, and other works of other artists.  (PhilStar Wire Service)
